2000 Jeep Cherokee oil pressure

I'm having a problem with my oil pressure. When you turn the key to the on postion it jumps up to 40 on the dash gauge. Once you start the car it jumps up all the way to the top at 80. I've changed the oil and replaced the oil filter but neither have helped. Please any help you can offer would be great. Thank you.

Have you checked the oil pressure switch? Here is what it looks like.

I had a similar problem and as mention before, it was the oil pressure sending unit. It is located beside the oil filter. Belive it was around $35.00 at advance auto and prety simply to replace.
