I have a 1999 Honda Accord Sedan w/ 3.0L V-6 and 94,500 miles.

I noticed that the car suddenly is making a loud whirling sound when in idle. The sound gets louder and something rattles when I accelerate.

The car would hum quietly before at idle.

I checked my oil and air filter and they are ok. I do routine maintaince and had major service done 6 months ago @ Honda dealer.

I noticed that it started to happen right after I filled up at the gas station. Could it possibly be the fuel? I filled up @ Costco gas station, 87 octane. My friend thinks its the timing belt or altenator.

Please Help.

Well, think about it. Does the sound disappear or is it masked when the engine accelerates? It is a moving item. Yes it could be the timing belt or the other belts on the system. But it could be the starter as well that doesn't completely release. That was my first thought in the description you gave. Don't forget to check out those fans on the radiator. Try to isolate the sound.
