My car recently had its timing belt redone. The timing belt broke at 80K miles and the crankshaft broke at the time. Mechanic says compression ratios are fine and car suffered no other damages. When I run the car, everything seems fine, till I come to stop at a light and I feel the engine vibrates a little. Also, when I hit the gas pedal feels like the engine hesitates for a second. Other wise car runs fine. What could be the problem?

Hi jmg_va,

Are you sure the crankshaft broke?

Vibration could be due to low idling speed or faulty engine mounts. Hesitation most probably is due to misfiring of spark plugs, cables or distributor.

Thank you for your response. I was told by my mechanic that the crankshaft broke. He charged me for a new one, and said that since the crankshaft broke the valves and pistons didnt get damaged and my compression ratios were fine. So no fix required there. I have since had it looked at by a honda dealer and their mechanic tells me I am off 2 teeth on my timing belt assemby. How serious is that? I am planning to go back to my mechanic.

Hi jmg_va,

Timing belt out of sync wil not cause any irrepairable damages but you still need to get it solved asap.

Your mechanic had made a mistake when installing the timing belt, are you sure he is up to the mark to solve your problem?

Regarding broken crankshaft, I was curious as I have never heard of such a thing happening before.
