Sometimes it won't start. There is a silver item (starter? Solenoid?) Attached to the positive battery cable. If I tap on it, the car usually starts. I had the starter replaced last year, so not sure what the problem is. It does cut off battery power. Can you help?

Hello,

It sounds like you might have a connection issue with the battery terminal.
The silver item attached to the positive battery cable is not a factory option and it is not the solenoid. Probably some sort of aftermarket battery terminal extension for installing aftermarket stereo.
Check so see if the terminals are corroded and clean if necessary.

Here is a helpful article:

Since you are able to start the car after you hit on the positive cable, you might have to replace the cable if it has broken wires inside or exposed wires.

I have attached the factory battery diagrams for your reference.

Please let me know of any questions.

Thank you.
