1997 Ford Taurus 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 119000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
car starts out fine, after about 20 mintues on the freeway the problem begins. in stop and go traffic, car wont shift into gear again-the engine just revs and rpms go up-once the car is turned off and restarted the transmission starts shifting with no problems, and Im able to drive until I have to stop again.....I checked the trans fluid and it was low-empty..I added more but seem to have the same problem...car will drive in 2nd gear....Please Help

why does it work fine after restarting the car? it seems to happen after engine is warmed up

When you added the fluid was the engine running? If not could be still low on fluid. It won't hurt to drop the tranny pan and clean the filter/replace it.

Are you using the correct type fluid? and what color is the transmission fluid before you add to it-does it smell burned?

it seemed that there was no fluid at all intitially, i started the car and added the fluid after that the fluid was the same red color as when I put it in...the car part store also gave me a thick additive that he said would help with slipping....I put in 1 bottle and half the other plus that additive

If it continues to slip-might want to have it pressure tested to identify internal problems-could also be the torque coverter one way clutch slipping.
