Recently my ranger would not idle after I started it. Fires up, then dies. If I held the gas pedal down it would run rough, but then die after I let the pedal off. Checked the connections, and then it would be fine. Drove fine for a few weeks. Same thing happened today, and I got a strong smell of fuel. Checked the connections again, started it and it behaved normally. I know it needs a fuel filter change, but why the raw fuel smell this time? Bad fuel pump maybe?

This sounds like a bad idle air control valve. Look into cleaning it out and see if it helps. It's always good to run a high octane fuel through a couple times a year to keep things clean.

I would check the idle air control valve and replace the fuel pump
