1998 Ford Ranger 4X4 problem

I have a turn dial four wheel drive switch with automatic locking hubs. When I turn the knob to 4 high nothing happens and after about a minute the 4 high and 4 low lights on the dash blink a few times then go off but it still does not engage. What do you think it could be.

Try tapping on the transfer cdase shift motor. Its a electric motor that fails and you can usually get it to work by tapping on it with a hammer. They have just made a aftermarket motor for it for about 100 bucks for this truck I think its made by dorman
