I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab 4x4 with a 4.0 V-6 paired with a Automatic transmission. Ok when driving the truck primarily on the highway but now also in the city it will get a random very noticable vibration (almost violent vibration) thoughout the entire truck, I doesnt seem to come from any particular place. The vibration however goes away if I put it in 4WD high. My mechanic told me my rear wheel bearings were shot and that my differential may need to be rebuilt or replaced as well. I intend on doing both this weekend but I want to know is there anything else that could cause this to happen? I tought it might be the transfer case? My universal joints and locking hubs are new within the last 4 months. PLEASE HELP.

Thankyou,
A poor college student

Poor college student. I was there and know what you're going through, so I'll do my best to help you. When the vibration happens, does the steering wheel shake or do you feel it more in the seat of the truck? Also, the 4wd makes it go away which makes me believe it has nothing to do with the rear differential or the rear wheel bearings. As far as the rear wheel bearing are concerned, usually you can hear a howling noise when you drive that will change when you make turns. Does that happen? Also, with 123K on it, the differential should be fine. Is it making noise? (Just trying to save you from spending money you could hold on to).

Finally, when you replace the u-joints and front hubs, were the CV joints in good condition? Does the vibration just come and go or is it brought on by a bump, pot hole?

Let me know and we'll try to figure this out.

Take care and have a great new year!

Joe
