Engine Performance problem
2003 Ford Focus 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

hi, i have a 1.4 focus and vehicle is ok on idle but when in 1st or 2nd gear on pull away it lacks power, when speed does get up it will plod along ok but if you need a little gas it starts to lack power. i do not believe it is a misfire as tick over is ok and recently replaced coil. it also has full service history. i suspect the catalyst as i have been told that when i replaced the coil due to misfire it can sometimes take the cat out and i get a rattle from the exhaust when revving sometimes.

Hi:
Based on your description, it sounds fuel related. Have you had the fuel pump pressure checked? That is what I recommend. Also, it could be caused by a dirty or partly clogged fuel filter. As far as the converter, something could have happened, but most likely it's ok. If you want, ask your mechanic to do a back pressure test on it to make sure it isn't plugged. The noise you hear is most likely the heat shield on the converter coming loose. They do make noise when this happens. Put clamps around it and it should take care of the noise.

Let me know what you find.
