Brakes problem
1993 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

When I apply the brakes, they act normal until just before coming to a complete stop. Then the pedal begins to pulsate and a buzzing noise seems to come from under the dash every time the pedal surges. If I unplug the harness in the engine compartment, the brakes work fine, but the ABS light stays on. The pads, rotors, drums, and shoes are new. What could be causing this and is it something I can repair myself?

The reason for the pulsating/buzzing is that the ABS system is "seeing" a wheel about to lock up. This could be because of a wheel is actually about to lock up and skid. It could also be caused by a sensor that is about to fail.

To verify the symptom as valid, try normal gentle braking on a hard and dry surface - like dry concrete or asphalt. If the pulsating occurs, stop and look for a dark track from one of the wheels - an indication of a wheel about to lock up.

Also, look for loose wheel bearings.

Don't forget about the rear wheels. If your system is a 4-wheel ABS, the rears also can cause ABS problems.
