Can someone help me out. My Expedition makes a thump thump noise on the take off and or at a stop. And also it tends to pull back as well. It sounds like its coming from the back.

Does it do it at a stop or as you stop?

Hi Again:
Ok. I have a few more questions. First, check the differential fluid to make sure it's full and clean. Next, check the universal joints on the rear drive shaft for play. Finally, check the tires to make sure there are no shifted belts. This may seem basic, but I need to start somewhere.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

I checked the differential fluid it's full not quite sure if it's clean. When I checked the fluid the plug was caked up. I checked the drive shaft for play I really couldn't move it. When I rotated the tires it got worse. The tires are ok granted they are roughly 8 years old and still in my opinion are in good shape.

If the tires are 8 years old, that could be the problem. Rotate the rear ones to the front to see if the sound changes location or sound because of weight differences. Also, what do you mean when you turned the rear wheels, it got worse? Did the drive shaft get tighter?

Before I had the tires rotated it wasn't that bad. One day after I had the tires rotated the thump thump noise got worse. As faar as the drive shaft getting tighter not sure. I just couldn't turn the drive shaft by hand not even a little.
