1997 Ford Escort transmission won't engage even after it ru

Is there a sensor that needs to be replaced that makes it engage or shift? This has me baffled and it is getting to be a hasle. The transmission works fine sometimes and then it just won't engage or shift in any position.

Start engine , Check tranny fluid and adjust as needed
have to get tranny codes if any
if does not move in any selected position and tranny fluid is OK
I would suspect internal tranny failure
