Since this happens when it rains, then something is getting wet. Question, when it does start when raining, does the engine seem to run normally other than the stalling when you start? Has the check engine light come on when this happens?

Try something for me. You will need to do this at night. Start the engine and open the hood. Mist water on all the ignition components. Check to see if there is any sparking / arcing from any of the wires. As far as the crank sensor, I believe your's is mounted on the bell housing of the transmission.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

I have had an intermittent problem with my 98 Stratus for some time, but now, during the last two cold spells, it wont start. I cannot here the fuel pump charging the system when I turn the key on while this problem is going on. After it warmed last time, I went out and checked all of the fuses. Non were bad, but at the same time, 5 of the dash lights had to be replaced. I have turned the ignition on without trying to start it in an attempt to give the fuel pump a bit of movement. I don't think the alternator is fully charging the system, as the car has to be jumped if the lights are left on for short periods of time.

If the battery dies that quickly, it may be the problem. Fully charge it and have it load tested. Most parts stores will do it for free.

Usually, if cranks good but won't start, have somebody crank it while you visually check for spark at the plugs. If you have spark everywhere, use a gage and check fuel pressure. Also check fuel injector pulse, engine cranking. What I've posted is the basics, that's how I begin.

What about your security system where applicable?

Single click means bad starter.

NO BUS: Bad connection, either at the PCM or behind the gauge cluster.

Hi the stratus works fine, until suddenly does not start. The gauge shoes no gas, the starter works, but the fuel pump does not. The ignition switch sends power to the relay and the relay works. Tapping with a little rubber hammer energizes the gauge and it starts. Install a new pump (and filter) and the same problem. With this difference: the car starts but it runs for a few min. In a very low idle ( almost like it runs with 5 cyl.) And the accelerator (gas pedal) does not react. I towed back to the mechanic and it works fine. Seems like it works after the towing vibrations all the time ( 4 times)
Also after the pump replacement, driving home suddenly stall and reengaged. Parked the car for 1 hr and it did not start after that, same problem. Help?

There is an electrical issue in the harness somewhere that is either loos or corroded. You need an electrical shop that is familiar with harness issues that can give you an idea of time and money. Very hard to diag from here but have done this in the past and is very labor intensive.

Are you refering to a fuel shut down switch like they have on a Ford? If so, I don't believe they have one. What is happening to the car? Have you lost both fuel and spark to the engine or just one or the other?

If you lost both, it's not the crank sensor. Have you checked the ASD (auto shut down)? There may be a problem there. Also, are you getting power to the coil?

The PCM regulates the ignition system. The PCM supplies battery voltage to the ignition coil through the Auto Shutdown (ASD) Relay.

The PCM controls ignition timing by turning on and off a transistor in the distributor.

During the crank-start period the PCM maintains spark advance at 9 °BTDC . During engine operation the following inputs determine the amount of spark advance provided by the PCM.

*Intake air temperature.
*Coolant temperature.
*Engine RPM.
*Intake manifold vacuum.

The PCM also regulates the fuel injection system.
