1996 Dodge Intrepid black smoke from exhaust

Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Dodge Intrepid 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 156000 miles

today my car died on me earlier and it wouldnt turn on, also it was not overheated but when it died on me, the temperature was all the way up. i let the car cool for like 40 min and i tried to turn it back on and and it did turn on but the lower water hose from the radiator broke and black smoke started to come out of the exaust. i alreadychecked the oil and the water didnt get to the cylinders, head gasket or the oil. why could this be happening?

Black smoke is an indication of running rich

Possible causes include a bad O2 sensor, excessive fuel pressure (bad fuel pressure regulator or plugged return line), leaky fuel injectors, dirty air filter or restricted air inlet, or a defective coolant sensor that prevents the engine management system from going into closed loop mode.
