Engine was stalling when we slow to a stop but would work after car sat for a bit. Took it to repair shop and they said it was crank shaft sensor. Replaced it and it shut off on way home. Took it back. They said must be bad part and replaced again. Shut off again on way home. Took to another repair shop. They said it was crank shaft sensor but the reason it was not working was because we needed to get a car computer update (which can only be done at dealership). Called dealership and they said this sounded odd. Said the new crank shaft sensor should work fine without an update. Any clue?

Good afternoon.

This does sound odd.

No, it does not need to have an update for that. That is a way of getting you out of the shop so they do not have to deal with it again.

Is the check engine light on?

Does it start back up right away?

It will start back up if the engine is cold. This is why we picked it up from two different repair shops a total of four times between the two of them. Because it appeared to be “fixed”, but ten miles down the road it would stall and shut off whenever we slowed to a stop sign or stop light. The check engine light has been on and off through the process. It will come on sometimes but then go off. And sometimes when it shuts off, it will not come on at all.

Okay, lets start with the codes. You can have them read at a parts store for free. Let me know all the codes that are stored in the system.

That will help us narrow the area of failure.

Here is a guide if you want to do the scan yourself. It sounds like a fuel pump going out to me which is common.

Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Cheers, Ken
