Anytime I shift the transmission into gear and release the clutch, it grinds, what could it be?

I was driving home and I shifted into first gear, turned right and then it just started this grinding sound and stopped going forward.

So, what happens is the CV axle has fallen out of the transmission, I would raise the front of the car and with a flashlight check to see if the CV axles are fully seated into the transmission differential.
