The transmission has entered "limp-home mode". Your check engine light should be on right now. Have the computer scanned and post the code numbers here\, and we will help diagnose.

43, 31,74. and as far as the check engine light it never lit up since we got the car. so i wanted to see what the deal was i took apart the cluster and found that someone had taken the light out. so i have no idea how long the light "should have been on". I'm wondering if I should come back at eh dealer that sold it to me for not making sure the light worked or not?

It is unfortunate that someone just wants to make a buck at the expense of others. I have seen MIL bulb pulled out a few times, drivers didn't know about it until time for state safety/emission inspections.
