The a/c should be on when the a/c is on. I dont know of a case when it isnt on with the defrost. The reason for this is that the a/c dries out the air so it can absorb the dew/fog on the windshield. Im constantly telling my wife to turn off the defroster when it is not needed to save on gas and wear and tear on comp.

We always unplug the AC pressure switch in the winter to keep the AC from kicking on when running defrost during winter months. It saves on gas, and if the engine is warm, then it dries out the air plenty for the cold winter months.

If it's in the spring, I'd recomend keeping it plugged in. The damp air needs extra drying, especially if it's not that cold, and you want the air a little cooler than full HOT, but still need defogging.
