I have a 2000 chevy cavalier with the small 4 cylinder engine, 150,000 miles, 28-30mpg. Recently, while hiway driving, the speedometer jumps around like crazy. Sometimes this also involves a momentary loss of power. It seems to happen more frequently the farther I go e.G a 50 mile trip it may happen once or twice, a 200 mile trip it might happen 10-12 times. It only seems to happen over 50 mph.

Check your vehicle speed sensor could be loose connection. VSS tells the computer how fast the car is going could be the problem for both.
