While driving to school, the car stopped running in a consruction zone. Car was pushed out of the way. Daughter called, I was at work. Sounded from what she said it might be the alternator. She didn't have the tools to change that, so I said buy a battery. At least the car can be moved off the closed lane. Didn't work. When my son and I got there we found that it didn't crank. This is what is left. 1. the lights work, headlights, tail lights, dome and dash. 2. the gauges don't move when the key is rotated to start. 3. the strip above the dash, where the cruise, abs, security etc. lights up, don't. 4. there is no sound of fuel pump or solenoid clicking. 5. battery V is 12.8v. Any ideas would be great.

By the description if I understand correctly, It sounds like the ignition switch. The bulb check position should have the cluster light up.
