Engine shuts off when stopped and blinking check engine light

My car was having rpm and acceleration problems when I was driving. It shuts off at a red light. When I restarted it it ran rough a bunch of smoke came out of the back and I have a blinking check engine light.

Having a blinking check engine light means that codes or a code is stored in the vehicles computer for the symptoms you're experiencing.If you don't have access to a scanner or code reader most auto parts stores have a tool loaner program and can rent you one.Some parts stores like AutoZone will check for free.Here is a tutorial showing what is involved on how to check:
