This car has a new thermostat, water pump less than 1 year old. Car runs normal, then occasionally the heat gauge will rise to near hot, and red flashing light indicates motor is hot. Took it to repair shop they can find nothing wrong. Anyone have any suggestions?

If the radiator is not clogged and there's no air in the system and also no boiling over the engine temperature sensor might be out of calibration misleading you-If in doubt get it block and pressure tested.
