It's possible he might have left the fuel sending unit unplugged when he replaced the pump.I would call him and complain and tell him your gas gauge doesn't work anymore and that it did before he changed the pump or it could be the relay check out the location and guide below.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please run this test and get back to us.

Yes, under the passenger rear seat. Can be checked via current ramping
to see what the pump current demand looks like.

Tap on the bottom of the gas tank (palm of hand, don't go nuts)
while someone is cranking the engine.

If she starts, pump has a worn spot.

That's easy just lifting up the rear seat wish they were all like that.
Pulled out pump, checked out fine, put every thing back together runs good. Its possible there was a dead spot in the motor or a loose crimp.

When ever there is a problem with something that has a relay involved I always start troubleshooting there first, to see if the problem is upstream or downstream.

Yes, dead spot on contact area for brushes. If you had no power at
the pump, then it would be a relay / power supply issue.

Have a shop check the waveform of the current to determine if there
is a dead spot.

The next time she doesn't start, tap on the bottom of the tank to
jiggle the pump motor to a good contact. Might not always work.
