there was a burning smell (no smoke) coming from my car and the radiator fan was still running when I turned the car off. what is that?

Check the radiator coolant when engine is cold. Seems you have an overheating problem. Did you note the temperature gauge reading when that occurred?
Hope you have not damaged the engine.
