Thermostat sensor

1 have a 1995 lumina my temp gauges and light are maxed out even if the car has been off for days as soon as the key is turned on max im afraid it may run hot it may be the cluster I have replaced the sensor by the radiator hose but was told there is another one on the back of the motor on the drivers side I have not changed it I do have an aftermarket one but I dont know if it will work or which place to put it I need help the car is supposed to be used for a trip tomorrow, I know nothing like last minuteit has a 3.1 engine automatic trans

Did you replace the coolant temperature sensor?

Unplug that sensor on the back of the head and see if the gauge drops down then. If so, replace the sensor. If not, you may have a wiring or gauge problem.
