Last October the fuel pump went out. I bought one from eBay and a friend of mine who's a certified mechanic put it on. Immediately the fuel efficiency was worse, and it would barely accelerate up a hill. Then a couple months later the check engine light came on. I can't remember the exact codes but nothing major. Spark plugs were replaced and something else I can't remember. A couple weeks ago it wouldn't shift into fourth gear. Mechanic friend of whom I don't think I can trust anymore and shouldn't have ever trusted said that it was in limp mode. It seems to come out of limp mode after it's drove for a little while and drives fine except for the same acceleration issue. I was told to get a MAF sensor but then told that it wasn't the issue even though I was under the impression that it was the code thrown. Now it acts as if it's out of gas but it's not. Fuel pump issues again apparently.

Wait I found the paper that has the code on it for the check engine light. Maybe it was major, and I was told wrong. It says an engine misfire. I don't know what to do. I'm a single mom and work as a Medical Courier so I need my car. I've been screwed around by the person I trusted to help me with this. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Hello, fuel and air issues can cause similar symptoms while driving. Less air = less fuel command from the pump and of course less fuel will give the same acceleration issues. Perhaps we can assume the fuel pump was installed correctly yet diagnosed incorrectly. A bad MAF will cause acceleration issues, but typically there will be a code but this could be verified with a scan tool that can read live data. The first thing I would do is to check that all the intake/air hoses are intact and without tears/holes in them. Sometimes a simple vacuum hose unplugged can give this condition.
