I removed the lug nuts from my car, none were the locking variety. I still cannot remove the wheel. There appears to be some kind of spiral retainer that grips the studs on two of the studs inside the rim. How to remove the wheel is my question and what tool, if any, do I need to do this? There was no special took wheel nut removal tool with the jack.

See the attached photo.

Hi,

If you have all wheel nuts removed, the only thing that is holding it is corrosion. If you feel confident there is something behind the wheel holding it, take a pic and upload it so I can see it. I'm not sure how manufacturers think people can get the wheels off in the event of an emergency. If you are along a highway and have a flat, it could be really dangerous.

However, here is what I suggest. Remove the lug nuts. Then, screw one back on about halfway so it isn't touching the wheel. From the rear of the wheel, use a dead blow hammer that is rubber, and hit the outside portion of the rim to break it loose from the hub.

I attached the directions below for removing the wheel. There is nothing other than the lug nuts holding them. However, pay attention to what I highlighted.

Let me know if that helps.

Take care,

Joe

Here is a photo that shows what looks like a star washer inserted two of the studs have this. The other 3 do not. The “washer” grabs the studs.

Hi,

I believe that it is a rotor retainer from the factory for production purposes. The wheel should still come off. They use those to prevent the rotor from falling off on the assembly line.

Were you able to get the other three off? Sometimes corrosion holds them tight. I usually will take a rubber dead blow hammer and smack the rear of the wheel. But I leave one lug nut on loose, so the wheel doesn't fall off when it loosens.

Let me know when you get it off or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Thank you for your help. They were rotor retainers and not wheel retention devices. The wheels came right off with a little persuasion.

Hi,

You are very welcome. I'm glad you got them off. It's amazing how corrosion can hold them on. I've actually had to loosen the lug nuts and slowly move the vehicle back and forth with the lugs halfway off so the corrosion would break. LOL I can't imagine what it would be like if a tire needed to be changed on the road.

Regardless, please feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome.

Take care,

Joe
