What is this part of the manifold

Sxt is my vehicle model. Question is with the exhaust manifold. On the OEM manifold there is a pipe that comes up from the manifold to a canister of some sort that leads to a rubber hose. What is that canister for? Do I need it since the aftermarket ones from autozone do not show it? Why I need to replace is because it cracked?

This is what is shown from Mopar for an express model. I think this is what you are talking about, I got this from Rock auto. See picture aftermarket does not use that.
