Hi, I am just wondering where to start with the Dodge Stratus coop R/T that I just purchased. It’s 99,000 miles. So, I’m guessing it was driven minimally, perhaps not enough for regular maintenance. However, I’m stuck with it. Besides fluids, what else should I be looking for? What do I have to do to make it operate for another hundred thousand miles?

Hello,

I would start with a full service, checking the brakes and suspension.
Carry out an automatic transmission service and most importantly replace the timing belt on the engine. The engine is a 6G72 Mitsubishi V6 and these belts should be replaced every 50-60k miles or 5 years, whichever comes first.

Listen out for any unusual engine noises like ticking noise on startup and at idle. This could be caused by bad hydraulic valve lifters. Also, check for any blue smoke from the exhaust pipe, especially on start up after standing for several hours. This could indicate worn valve stem seals and those should be replaced as this will lead to high oil consumption.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Boris
