Hi: This regards the car listed above with an LS 2.4L Ecotec engine. Issue is weak/lagging acceleration with cold engine. It is important to note this is definitely both engine temperature and ambient temperature related. The issue is present both summer and winter, but much more pronounced with winter temperatures, because engine starts out colder and takes longer to heat up. It is also important to note that the car starts and idles/sounds fine, and once up to operating temperature, drivability/acceleration and engine sound is fine. The issue is that if you start the car and try to drive immediately (summer or winter), acceleration is weak, and when you try to accelerate (even gently), there is noise that sounds perhaps to be timing chain rattling? If you drive immediately when cold, but very slowly/gingerly on level street for several blocks while engine warms up, there is no rattling sound (unless you try to accelerate). Whether driving or sitting/idling, after about 8-10 minutes (depending on ambient temperature), car will run/accelerate fine. Possible VVT solenoid issue?

Hi,

Based on your description, it sounds like there may be an issue with the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT). The ECT is used by the powertrain control module to determine the engine's needs as far as an air/fuel mixture. If the sensor is indicating the wrong temperature, it can create an extremely lean or rich fuel mixture.

Here is what I suggest: If you have access to a live data scan tool, when the engine is cold, check the signal from the ECT to see if it is close to the ambient temperature. Interestingly, this may or may not set a code because the PCM only knows it is receiving a signal and not if it is right or wrong.

Let me know. Also, I attached a pic of the sensor location below.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Makes sense and sounds like a good place to start. I'll see if my scanner provides that kind of output/info. If not, the part is cheap enough I'll just replace it. Not a bad idea to just replace it on a nearly 14-year-old car. Will try to look at car this weekend. Thanks.

Hi,

You are very welcome. I'm interested in knowing what you find. Hopefully, it will be something simple.

Hang in there. We'll figure it out.

Take care,

Joe
