I replaced the water pump because the bearing went out and after 3 weeks the new water pump bearing went out too. Replaced it and again the same thing happened. What could cause the water pump to go bad like that? I replaced the power steering pulley, the tensioner pulley, and the alternator, could the clutch fan make the water pump go bad?

Hi,

I don't see how the fan could cause an issue unless it is unbalanced due to damage. Just for curiosity, were both new pumps from the same manufacturer? Are they new pumps or remanufactured? If they are remanufactured, there is a chance a bad bearing is being used.

Since the belt tension is done by an automatic tensioner, chances are it isn't overly tight. However, does the belt ride centered on the pulley? Are you sure it is routed correctly? See pic 1 below.

Let me know.

Joe

Yes, the pumps were from same place and yes, the pumps are remanufactured pumps, also how can I tell if the fan isn't balanced. So most likely I got 2 water pumps with weak bearings in them.

For the fan to be an issue, I feel you would see or hear it when turning. What brand pump are you getting and did both fail the same way? Is there a leak from the weep hole or is it making noise? With the belt disconnected, pick a blade and mark it on the fan. Turn it to 12, 3, 6, and 9oclock. At each position, allow it to stop. See if the fan moves when you let go of it. If one side is heavier, the heavy side will go to the 6oclock position.

If they were remanufactured, I would suspect faulty parts. If they are new, either we have a poorly designed and built pump or you got really unlucky. Let me know as much as you can as far as the failure.

Let me know.

Joe
