2003 Volvo XC90

we had a brake failure message come on for the first time last night. The check engine light soon came on and the speedometer, odometer and tachometer (rpm) all quit working. I heard a small thump and the engine seemed to loose power. If I restarted the car, the instrument panel would come back but only for a few seconds and the brake failure message and check engine light were on constantly. Is this just a computer error of is the tranny shot?

Hi mrbubble2010, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation

1st step here is have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

The symptoms you are having I would recommend you actually take it in to a Volvo dealership. You could be having some communictions issues with the control units in the network due to a CANbus problem?
