2002 Volvo V70 unknown squealing sound?

2002 Volvo V70 All Wheel Drive Automatic 156000 miles

We have a '02, 2.4 L turbo V70XC AWD.

Just bought it used. The known problems seem minor such as: brakes, CV, and rear differential is out. Also mechanic says there may be some oil leaking from these areas not the engine itself. We plan to address these issues as soon as we can afford to.

and the other thing is we can't seem to identify with a squealing noise when the car is started and while its running. It stops after running it for a while.

The mechanic claims he never heard it when it went in for a transmission flush last.

It sounds kind of like a belt is bad, but the timing belt is good and fan belt looked fine. Are we possibly over looking another area? Husband thinks possibly the alternator is bad, but would this cause a squealing sound too?

Hi cookmonster,

Thank you for the donation. Squealling noises are caused by slipping belts. Check the belt tension.

If any belt is adjusted slightly below tension, it would squeal during initial start up or when accelerating.

SQUEALING NOISES TYPICALLY COME FROM PULLEYS. IF THE SERPENTINE BELT AND TIMING BELT LOOK FINE, IT COULD BE A TENSION PULLEY OR AN IDLER BEARING. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THESE PIECES TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK.

When is the noise noticeable? Is it only whe it is cold and goes away when it gets hot? What you can do is this, start it when coldand if you hear the noise shut it off and remove the serpentine belt. Start the car again to see if the noise goes away. If it does then check your pulleys. If pulleys are O.K. Then the belt is making noise. Now if you remove the serpentine belt and you still hear a noise, remove the timing belt cover and pay close attention to the water pump and try to verify if the noise is actually coming from the front of the engine or if it is some where else? Try this steps first and let me know what they find.
