I brought my 1998 volvo wagon in to have the brakes and rotors replaced. The mechanic told me that the axle shaft boots were torn and the grease had leaked out of them. What does this mean? He priced fixing them at $620. Is this reasonable?

Depends on the hourly rate? Right side axle to replace both boots ALLDATA calls for 2.3. Say hourly rate is $100 that is $230 dollars in labor for the right side. Left side is 1.9 hours so thats $190 for both boots on the left side. That is $420 dollars in labor plus whatever the boots cost? So lets assume the boot kit cost around $100 per side that will be $200 for the left and right side axle boot kit. You are now at $620 for the repair. So sounds about right. Where I am at we charge $145 an hour. You may want to shop around but most of your cost is going to be in labor. Hope this made some sense. If you have any more questions let me know.
Also check out this link from 2carpros.com wich explains the axle way better then I ever will.

ITS MORE LIKE $70.00 FOR THE OUTER BOOT AND ABOUT $50.00 FOR THE INNER BOOT. THE AMOUNT OF $620.00 FOR REPLACEMENT OF AXLE BOOTS SOUNDS HIGH, SPECIALLY IF THE REPAIR IS BEING PERFORMED AT A LOCAL SHOP. YOU MIGHT AS WELL TAKE IT IN TO THE DEALER AND HAVE THE REPAIR DONE THERE. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN, SOMETIMES INDEPENDENT SHOPS ARE CHARGING MORE THAN DEALERS, ITS DEFINITELY WORTH THE SECOND OPINION.

Thanks for your help. I called the volvo dealer nearby and he said it should cost about $300 for the boots and the labor together. I'm atleast going to bring it there and have him see what he thinks. Thanks again for the advice!

Sounds like they will only be doing one side. If both sides are torn then it will be more then that. So just have them check it out to see if only one side or both need to be done.
