Electrical problem
1997 Volvo V70 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi,

Our V70 wagon has the beeping reminder noise going whilst driving. We have checked the fuses and changed some that were broken - lights above dashboard also out when key in ignition. How can we stop the beeping noise?

THERE IS A MICROSWITCH IN EACH DOOR LOCK MOTOR THAT TELLS THE SYSTEM WHEN THE DOORS ARE CLOSED. THERE MAY BE A FAILURE IN ONE OF THE DOOR LOCK MOTORS/MICROSWITCHES.

Thank you for your response. One of the passenger door windows will not go up too so this may be related to the key ingnition beeping if there is a failure in the door lock. Is there anything that can be done by us or is this a job for a mechanic?

THE WINDOW NOT WORKING IS PROBABLY NOT RELATED TO THE BEEPING. THE WINDOWS ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE WINDOW SWITCHES. CHECK THE INDIVIDUAL SWITCH, NOT THE SWITCH AT MASTER PANEL, JUST THE SWITCH AT THE DOOR; PLAY WITH THE SWITCH UP AND DOWN, SEE IF IT WILL START TO WORK THAT WAY. AS FOR THE BEEPING SOUND, JUST TO CONFIRM, THE SOUND IS DOOR CHIME THAT IS ON ALL THE TIME?

TRY AND FUNCTION THE DOOR LATCHES MANUALLY. GET A PEN OR A SCREW DRIVER, WHILE THE DOOR IS OPENED, CLOSE THE DOOR LOCK LATCH. CHECK EACH DOOR AND SEE IF YOU CAN FIGURE OUT WHICH DOOR LOCK MOTOR IS MALFUNCTIONING. TO UNDUE THE LATCH, HOLD THE HANDLE IN OPEN POSITION AND WITH A PEN OPEN THE LATCH. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND

All door locks seem to be okay and lock when closed. The drivers outside handle however, seems a little slack - could this be the one that is malfunctioning, as it seems to control the lights too, which are not working. Thanks.

WHEN LOCKING THE VEHICLE, ARE THE OUTSIDE LIGHTS FLASHING? IF YOU WERE TO LOCK THE VEHICLE AND UNLOCK ANY DOOR MANUALLY, DOES THE ALARM SOUND?

No. The lights have never flashed when locked and no alarm goes off when unlocked manually.

WHEN A DOOR LOCK IS FAILING, HAVING A REMOTE IS THE EASIEST WAY TO DIAGNOSE WHICH ONE IS NOT WORKING. USING A KEY TO FUNCTION THE LOCKS DEFEATS THE AUTO LOCKING SYSTEM BECAUSE YOU ARE MANUALLY FUNCTIONING THE LOCKS THROUGH THE DRIVER'S DOOR. IS THE REMOTE HOUSING BROKEN OR THE SWITCH FUNCTION BROKEN?

Unfortunately the keys were dropped too many times that the casing broke on the remote - the switch was okay but now it has been too long to know where they are & too expensive to replace the remotes. So I guess it may be too hard to work out the problem - am I just best to take it to a electrical mechanic to look at?

I THINK YOUR NEXT STEP IS TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALER. IF YOU TAKE IT TO SOMEBODY ON THE OUTSIDE, THEY ARE MORE LIKELY NOT GOING TO HAVE A WIRING DIAGRAM OR KNOW THE INS & OUTS OF THE LOCKING SYSTEM.
