Mechanic (non-dealer) ran diagnostic re Check Engine light; returned code 0700, fault in transmission control unit. Must take car to a dealer for repair. Before doing so, would like to know the nature of the problem and approximate cost to repair.

That code only indicates that there is a trouble code stored in the transmission control module. Can you have the transmission control module scanned or codes? With out that, it is impossible to try and give you any advise?
