I have a 1998 Volvo S70 sedan (not a turbo) with about 110K miles. I recently took it in for new brake pads, and was told my rear brake calipers could possibly crack when the rear pads were replaced. I know nothing about calipers, does anyone know the possibility of them actually cracking, and if so, is it something that must be repaired?

For one, I would recommend getting familiar with doing it yourself. It's easy enough even if you're not experienced. I honestly think they're blowing smoke. Calipers are generally heavy duty and not prone to cracking. I can say that the back pads are much more difficult to replace than the front but it's still doable. Just make sure to bleed them when you're done since there's no getting around the fact that you're going to loose lots of brake fluid!
