We lost one of our ignition keys for this car. I want to make a duplicate, and Volvo says there is a chip that will need to be programmed, need to order a blank, etc. And will cost almost $200 to have a new key and fob made. Is this true? We found a locksmith to do it for $35. But if the chip is truly in the key itself can this be done. Are we stuck using Volvo with those ridiculous prices.

Actually you can do it yourself here are the instructions in the diagrams below to help reprogram your key fob. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I agree there is no way around it? Try looking for an independent VOLVO repair shop? They may be able to do it cheaper?
