2001 Volvo S60 loud squealing noise

My car starts ok but after running for about a half hour or so and I stop and put it in park the rpm needle looks like the needle on a sewing machine, up and down up and down and I hear a loud squealing noise coming from the belt area but when I rev up the motor a few times all is well. If I dont rev it up the motor shuts off.
