I have a 2001 S40. I have been concerned about the slow crank. The temp sensor was indicated as a possible problem and was replaced. It hasn't fixed the problem. This particular shop indicated an estimated 2 1/2 labor time to replace the sensor. Last year, another shop estimated one hour replacement labor. Before we began the work they said that the car had trouble idling and stalled on them - NOT what I had experienced. Not sure I trust them to go back. Taking out the temp sensor doesn't make sense if they're going to charge me another 2 1/2 hours to save me the $74 on the sensor. Any thoughts?

Not being Volvo savvy, all I can add is a slow crank and the age of the car might indicate a problem with the battery. The temp sender sounds like a diagnostic that I cannot agree with, being that a temp sender and a slow crank do not seem to me to be related. A check of the voltage whilst cranking will be enlightening, it should never drop below 10 volts during a crank test.

Ok. My 2000 volvo s40 idles when at a stop and I have to keep my foot pressed on the gas and brake at the same time or else it will die. It is also slow to start up. I had a computer diadnostics test ran on it and the tech said he thought it MAY be a fuel pressure regulator problem, to go ahead and replace it and see if that will fix the problem. Well I dont have alot of money to spend and I have priced the FRP part and the cheapest I can find online is $188. I am just afraid that after I order that part what if it dont fix it and then I am out of money and a car for even longerso I was hoping and praying someone can read this test he gave me and give me a 2nd opinion. Ok her it is:
ignition timing= 12.0,
throttle position= 14.9
O2 volts B1-S1= 0.465
O2 volts B1-S2 = 0.700
fuel system 1+ CL
calc, load valu= 31.4
coolant temp= 180
fuel trim bank1 short term= 7.0
fuel trim bank 1 long term= -3.9
Ok thats all I have and if anyone can PLEASEEEE help me I greatly appreciate it.

Sounds like you may have 2 separate problems or you could have a problem with the idle air control valve? What happens when you try and start the car up? Do you have a strong crank or a weak crank? Let me know and lets see what we can do.

Hi rodogo,

You should try to isolate the cause and I would suggest trying the following link to understand better how to go about trying to get to the cause.

If you need any help, feel free to ask, but please remember that we can only be of help if you are able to provide proper and detailled information.
