What I have is a 1994 volvo 850 turbo 5 cyc. My sister and I went to pick up her boyfriend from the airport and he had placed his stuff in the back. He couldn't get the hatch to close. So he did something to it and slammed it closed and now I can not get it to open. What can I do to get it to open? I have tried using the key and it acts like it is locked or something. It just will not open at all. It sucks to have a station wagon when you can't open the back hatch.

Well there's nothing on the inside or the outside that looks like it would jam the door. I've tried to use the key to get it to open, I've tried to open it from the inside and from the outside and no luck. It acts like it is locked and there's no way to unlock it. Is there a way to take off the panel on the door without having the door open to see if anything is wrong that way?

YOU WILL HAVE TO TRY TO ACCESS THE LOCK FROM INSIDE THE TAILGATE AREA. IF YOU PULL ON INNER TAILGATE PANEL FROM THE TOP, TRY TO GET TO THE LOCK MECHANISM AND TRY TO OPEN THAT WAY. THE TAILGATE PANEL IS HELD BY CLIPS, IF THEY BREAK, THE CLIPS ARE REPLACEABLE SEPARATE FROM THE PANEL. WORST CASE YOU MAY NEED TO PURCHASE A REPAIR KIT FOR THE HOLES IN THE PANEL, IF THEY BREAK.

I had similar problem on my 850 wagon this summer, a small tool had fallen into the latch area before I closed the hatch, and it jammed the latch once closed. I crawled inside, pulled the handle which should open the door from the inside, and kicked the hatch many times - it finally opened. Don't know what kind of damage I did to the interior plastic panel, but at the time didn't care.

It is such a hassle with it not working. When I go grocery shopping or take my kids to soccer it becomes a real chore. I hate having to either move the seats to get stuff out of the back or climbing over the seats to get the stuff out. I hope I can get it open soon.
