In 5th gear, the transmission slips for about 2 tenths of a second about every two seconds. The tach will typically jump from 2 to 2.1 then right back to 2, for example, and I can feel the momentary loss of power. Happens whether it's in automatic or tiptronic manual 5th gear.

I don't notice it when accelerating, but it's noticeable when cruising.

Does not happen in any other gear.

I really don't want to take it to the dealer. I change the oil and spark plugs and do light maintenance myself, but I'm not a real mechanic.

Anything simple I can check or try?

Hi
Hope this helps!

From experience of auto gearboxes, its sounds like you may have a faulty clutch band on 4th or 5th gear. It doesnt sound like an oil problem, as you would have this problem in all the gears and when accelerating.

Do you use the vehicle to tow anything? If you do, this could be the reason for the slippage in 5th.

The best thing to do is to try and book it into a auto gearbox specialist or a VW dealer, even though you do not want to, and ask them to carry out a diagnostic on the gearbox for slippage in 5th gear.

Hope this helps!
