Water pump failures

Hi:
I have a 1997 VW Jetta that we are about to install the fourth water pump in as many weeks. They seem fine when first installed but after a couple of hundred miles they start leaking again. My mechanic has no idea what is causing this. Any suggestions. The vehicle is in otherwise good repair with 130,000 miles on it. It is a gas 2.0 engine.

Hi I saw your question and have a similar problem. My son just bought this car that the owner said he replaced timing belt and water pump yet the pump is leaking. We already replaced the gasket that looked trashed. Did you find out if a new or supposed new pump can leak? Thanks
