VW Engine Fan Runs?

This is a 2003 VW Jetta, 1.9 TDI, 50K miles, 5 speed stick.

The engine fan runs continually, a fuse was blown, and A-C did not work, replaced fuse, and fan runs, A-C works, but of course, the battery would shortly go flat, so fuse was removed, so car can be used. Have checked the fan thermal switch, it is OK. Must be a relay or some controller which turns the fan on when the AC is switched on. CAn not find a wiring diagram for the car, or location of parts. By runs continously, I mean when the car is dead cold, fuse inserted, fan starts. Also, can you advise me as to where to obtain a wiring diagram for this car?

Thank you very much for your attention.

Cheers.

Tom,
I think that you are on the right track in looking for a relay. I recently had a similar problem with a 1991 Jetta. A parts person at a VW shop islolated the relay and I was able to replace it myself. On my vehicle, the relay sits on the back of the intake manifold, has a single connection going in and out of the relay, and the back half of the relay is yellow in color. Sorry, I do not remember the name of the specific relay. Hope this information helps.
