I have a 98 Volkswagon Passat, 1.8T with 150,000 on it and it just blew a head gasket. The mechanics looked over the car and said it needs a water pump, timing chain and head gasket. I believe they may be inflating their repair estimates. What is your estimate?

I'll put it this way. If all 4 tires are worn out but only one is really bad do you only replace the bad one or all 4?

At 150K the engine is nearing the end of it's life cycle. Those items are a must to be replaced. The mechanic is not telling you wrong. It's the same old story, pay me now or pay me later.

let me know and good luck
