Grinding noise

I own a 1994 VW Jetta III with about 150,000 miles on it. I have no idea what the engine size is. Recently, my car started making an awful grinding noise that sounds like it is coming from under the hood. It seems that when I push my clutch in, the noise stops. My first thought was my transmission, but I know absolutely nothing about cars. My grandfather said it could be the flywheel, which I have no clue what that is. I decided that I'm going to drive it as little as possible until I get it into the shop. I didn't know if anybody would know what this could be and what it would cost. :|

I think its time for a new clutch in your Jetta! The flywheel is the plate that the clutch connects with when you realease it to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. Whenever a mechanic changes a clutch, they should check the flywheel as a matter of course. I would go somewhere that knows VWs.
