Coolant for VW Cabrio

I have a '99 VW Cabrio and need to add coolant. The manual specifies that I must put in VW coolant. Is this true, or can I put in Penzoil or some other brand? What is the difference? Thank you.

VW says. Coolant G 012 A8D A1 can be used only in older cars and only after a complete flush! Now you would need to call a parts store or VW parts dept, to see what this number crosses to! Or engine damage will result!
