Car hiccups

I have an audiA3 1996. It hiccups while driving in any gear, seems worse in city driving. Any ideas?

You could try and clean the mass air flow sensor, this could be the cause of the problem. Its located on the air intake. This might not sort the problem but its a good place to start. It sorted my car out, it was acting simalerly in low gears.
