How do I know what "type" engine I have in my 1972 vw bus? I am confused by the type 1 or 2 or 3 or 4.

The bus itself is a Type 2. If it is a vehicle sold new in the USA, it will have a 1700cc Type 4 engine in it. This engine is flatter and has the cooling fan mounted on the (rear) nose of the crank shaft. 1971 and earlier buses as well as those later ones sold in most of the rest of the world had the earlier Type 1 engine, like the bug. 1600cc and somewhat less horsepower. The type 1 engine has a cooling fan on top that is driven by the belt.
