1999 Volkswagen Jetta shifting

My car is an automatic and when I start driving it shifts fine from 1st. To 2nd. But thats it it wont shift any farther and that happens even if I manually shift from 1, 2, 3, drive. I have heard about shift computers and speed sensors what do you think
